The stage couple of the moment are Michael Brandon and Glynis Barber, the husband and wife team who were once Dempsey & Makepeace on television.Brandon, now playing the title role in Jerry Springer the Opera at the National, is awaiting news of its transfer to the West End. Barber, meanwhile, is hurling herself back into work now that their son, Alexander, has reached the age of 10.
"Being away from our home in London is going to be very difficult," she says. First, she has signed up for a run as Lady Macbeth in Stafford. After that, she is committed to a 16-week national tour of the West End production of The Graduate. She is playing Mrs Robinson.
One romantic idea - meeting in motorway service stations once a week - has been rejected as impractical. Instead, Sacha Brooks, producer of The Graduate, has promised to give Barber a 24-hour return flight to London every Sunday, from wherever she is performing.
Like Kathleen Turner and Jerry Hall in the London production, Barber will have to strip off each night. Is she prepared?
"I didn't see it in London. Tell me," she asks sweetly, "Did they take everything off? And which way round were they? I mean, did they show their fronts or their backs?"
Such innocence...
