The Celsius Scale is based around the freezing and boiling points of water, set, respectively, at 0 and 100; the Fahrenheit Scale's zero point was attained by mixing equal points of water, ice, and salt. By the late twentieth century on Earth, the Celsius Scale was the one most used, the Fahrenheit Scale being used in the USA.
In Star One, Zen reported that the surface temperatures of the planet found at Star One's co- ordinates rise 'above freezing point' only during daylight hours at the equator'. Presumably, the freezing point was that of water.
This is a temperature below which it was not possible to go, -273.15°C or 459.67°F, calculated by Scotsman William Thompson, 1st Baron Kelvin of Largs (1824-1907). It was referred to once, when, in Countdown, Avon, in describing Albian, said, 'Temperate climate in the equatorial zone, but both polar regions are uninhabitable. Temperatures remaining close to absolute zero'.
As a planet with a temperate zone cannot be close to absolute zero at the poles, an explanation for Avon's statement can be that he made a mistake, that the instruments he read made a mistake, or that the planet had a very strange orbit.
