In this system of measurement, some of the units of length were:
12 inches | 1 foot. |
3 feet | 1 yard. |
5280 feet | 1 mile. |
1760 yards | 1 mile. |
There was only one reference in the series to this unit of measurement. In Sand, Servalan pulled the muzzle of Tarrant's gun to her forehead and said that at a distance of 'one inch', the shot should be 'even more efficient'. In that context, it was probably used colloquially, and was not a reference to an exact inch.
There were 4 references to this unit:

A unit based on the distance light travels in a year, referred to 4 times in the series:
Episode | Reference |
---|---|
Killer | Blake wondered why the ship K47 would suddenly appear 'thousands of light years away'. |
Terminal | Tarrant commented that they must be 'light years' away from any populated planet. |
City at the Edge of the World | the recorded voice of the builder of the vault's security system told Vila and Kerril that they were on a starship, now 'at least three thousand light years' away. |
Orbit | Egrorian showed Avon and Vila a lunar satellite of Porthodos, in the next constellation to this one, 'some seventeen light years' distant, before he destroyed it with the tachyon funnel. |
While references 1, 3, and 4 would appear to be light years with reference to Earth years, the builder of the vault in City was presumably referring to Kezarn years, although this could have been otherwise, as his recording was able to translate Vila and Kerril's speech.
Used to measure distances in deep space, it was mentioned twice:
Artix told Raiker in Space Fall that the London's scanner's range was 'about five subsecs on the high-D grid' Leylan, in the same episode, ordered that the London be put on a new course with a 'three subsec margin' from the outer limits of the space battle.
While a subsec might have been divisions of a parsec (3.262 light years), this is speculation, and no information was given on whether it was used outside of the Federation. (See SUBSEC.)
