REBEL

Mini Review By Sarah Thompson

There's lots of gen romance in this zine, mostly between Avon and various original female characters. However, there's also a fairly good mix in terms of the seasons in which the stories are set and the treatment of the various characters.

I'm missing issues 10, 16, and 17, but was able to fill in the contents from an ad. If anyone else has those issues, I'd love to know the exact dates of publication and any more relevant details about the stories. And have there been any more issues? (I suppose I could always write to the publisher and ask...)

Review By Julia Jones

Published in 1985, so one from the early days. 60 closely typed A5 pages, with the size of the print suggesting that it was reduced from A4. The physical quality of the zine is poor - in fact, there's a note included in the zine apologising for the poor quality of the printing, and promising a change of printers. The zine's been so badly printed that words and occasionally whole lines have had to be written in by hand. It's obviously not the editor's fault, but it does make the zine difficult to read. Those with poor eyesight might want to give the zine a miss.

There's some poetry in the zine, but I'm not greatly enamoured of most fan poetry. This isn't dire, but it doesn't rock my booties either. It only takes up a couple of pages, so it's not a problem.

I found the zine rather frustrating, because I kept feeling that I'd like to see these authors when they'd learnt a bit more about the craft of writing - potentially good, but in need of more practice. If I'd seen this zine early on in my zine reading career, before I'd been spoiled by seeing how good some writers are (including at least one of the authors in this zine:-), I'd probably have liked it a lot more.

Spellbound - Maria C. Przelskawska

Avon gets to rescue a beautiful princess from a tower, and slay her wicked uncle. Lightweight story, somewhat marred by the POV switching from character to character every sentence or two, and an occasional descent into purple prose, but fun.

Dream Brother Dream - Elizabeth Everett

An exhausted S4 Avon is dreaming about his brother and his childhood. Some interesting concepts and writing, but a promising beginning becomes incoherent, IMHO. I'd like to see a rewrite of this after the author had more experience.

Stratagems - Susan M Morton

An alternative view of what happened on Gauda Prime. I'd like it a lot better if I could work out what the author was suggesting had actually happened - this one's a little too cryptic for my tastes. Or maybe I just shouldn't read zines when I'm jet-lagged.

Deja-Vu - Nicola Barnard

Very short story about how the deaths on Gauda Prime will trigger the next cycle of rebellion a generation later. Some of the story borders on breaking suspension of disbelief for me, but I very much like the suggestion that it's the Federation bureaucracy's own unheeding use of Delta menials that gives one of them a glimpse of the possibility of rebellion.

Mirrors in Time - Margaret Martin

I suppose "Avon finding Cally's not-quite-dead-yet body on Terminal" wasn't quite such a cliche when this zine was published... This one has the merit of using it as an excuse for Cally to have a vision of a time PGP, with a plot I don't recall seeing before.
